My father’s struggles with smoking and drinking motivated me to create DayOne Sober: a daily counter with pledges, milestones, and reasons to keep going.

DayOne Sober is an Android day counter and support companion for people who want to move away from alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, or gambling. It combines a counter, daily pledge, milestones, and personal reasons for quitting. I made it because my dad used to struggle with smoking and drinking, and I wanted to create something for people who wish to move away from those habits.

Why did I make DayOne Sober?

The motivation is personal. Watching someone close to me struggle made the idea of a small, everyday support tool matter to me. I wanted the app to focus on today’s commitment and the reasons a person chooses to continue, rather than turning a difficult process into a judgment about their character.

I am not claiming that a counter solves dependence. I wanted to make progress visible and keep personal motivation close at hand. That is the role I see for this app alongside whatever other support someone needs.

What does the daily routine look like?

Choose what you are quitting and set a starting date. The home screen shows elapsed days and hours. A daily pledge gives you a simple action to return to: make a commitment for today, without needing to settle every future day at once.

  • A day and hour counter for the goal you selected.
  • A daily pledge and a timeline of milestones.
  • A money-saved estimate based on the spending information you provide.
  • Personal reasons for quitting, with an optional photo.
  • An “I’m struggling” toolkit with a breathing delay and your own reasons.

What happens after a lapse?

The listing describes a reset that preserves history rather than erasing it. That matters to the tone of the product: a reset changes the current count, but it does not mean the earlier effort never happened. The next entry should be something you can return to, not a screen you avoid out of shame.

Who is this app for?

DayOne Sober is for people who want a simple record of their commitment and a place to keep their reasons. It is not a treatment program or a clinical assessment. The toolkit is a small support feature, not a substitute for professional care.

If you are concerned about dependence or withdrawal, discuss a safe plan with a qualified health professional. The app cannot assess what is safe for you. This article describes the product rather than giving instructions for stopping a substance.
